The Crabby Witch

Stupid period cramps are happening with full force today. In that spirit story, here’s a story about a crabby witch having a bad day

Maudster the witch woke up to find she had left her wand amid the crystals all night. This was especially bad because maintaining a delicate balance is essential for witchcraft. Her wand right now was like an ogre on hell (it was a mixture of fruits and concentrated energy that ogres used to power up). Ugh! just touching her wand cramped her hand and gave her a headache. Freaking great!

Onto the most important task of the morning, feeding her familiars. She called Jinx and Pebbles to come and eat their food. For a minute there was silence, but before she could panic, she heard them. The bang of cauldrons being toppled over and a glass bottle shatter. Running to the scene of the crime, there was Jinx her cat once again bamboozled by Pebbles the white crow; who had hung a paper bag around his neck. Jinx was frantically trying to tear it off while pebbles looked on amused.

“I’m at my wits end with both of you, Pebbles be a better elder sister, act your age. Jinx calm down”

Jinx sat down with a plop and stared at her while she bent to remove the bag.

“I already have a headache from wielding this wands energy right now, so you two behave yourself today”

She was met with a blank stare from jinx and a withering look from pebbles. That little shit knew how to speak 8 languages and never bothered to talk to her. “Ugh fine just stay out of my way”. She waved her wand out of habit to sweep up the mess and was instantly captured in a tornado. Jinx let out a leap of joy at being lifted into a windy roller-coaster pebbles was thrown at the window while Maudster herself was holding on to her wand for dear life. When the wind settled everything was in place and her home was the shiniest it had ever been.

“Phew all’s well that ends well right Pebbles?” Pebbles glare could pierce granite. “Alright alright sorry, I told you guys the energy is off”

Her wind chimes tinkled and she sighed, her sister Matilda was calling for something or the other.

“Hi Maudy” she chimed “please remember we have to meet the clients today they are having trouble with their farms on the west, we promised to help them”

“Right… Maudy drew out the word hedging. “is there any way to postpone this?”

“What?! why what’s wrong?”

“Well, I kind of overcharged my wand a bit”. “It may have been amid the crystals, all night” Maud had already closed her eyes awaiting the onslaught.

“Maud! All night! you have to know how bad that is! witchcraft is a precise art, it’s a science. That is so careless!” Matty was taking deep breaths

“Yes Matty”, Maud had to stop herself from snapping back, this headache was getting worse. “it’s almost like loosing our tempers would also be bad for the craft”

Matilda took an angry beat before replying- you are right, but that was careless,” She emphasised. “And no we can’t postpone. Their farm has a mole infestation and since you were the one that found that mole “gentle” and blessed it, it really seems like our responsibility to at least go and negotiate with your “adorable” mole or find him an alternate dwelling. The Bucklands have been quite understanding about it so let’s try and put our best foot forward.”

“That mole was cute! And all he asked for was a cozy burrow to chill in when he needed space from everyone. That was such a simple request how could I say no?!”

“Yes Maudy, ok” Matty sighed. “Talpa is a sweet mole. And… ugh I’m  sorry I overreacted”.

“That’s ok you’re bossy” Maud teased knowing how much sorries sucked for Matty

“And you are a 100 percent careless” Matty poked back

“Yes, yes sorry.”

Now please do some grounding exercises for the wand and get ready for the meeting. Be there at 1200 sharp”.

“Ok!” Maud assured and cut the connecting with her sister and business partner.

Maudy had to take a moment it suddenly felt like too much, too overwhelming. She already had to water her herbs, organize her drawings, speak to the village council about fixing the bridge. A task she had been preparing for, for 3 days. The council was agreeable enough but very slow so it was best to have all your ducks in a row before speaking to them. Now she also had to do grounding exercises for her wand all while she had a pounding headache.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath in counted to four and exhaled twice then deep breath in. she did that till her headache calmed down. One thing at a time, first and foremost the wand. She had to close up the house for this. Jinx rubbed himself on her feet ready to go with her while pebbles faked a sigh and flew to her shoulder. She rolled her eyes at the antics and locked the house with various chants drawing a boundary around it. Too many powerful things inside to be left unprotected.

She had to walk to the forest for the ritual. A lot of witchcraft has to do with nature and being able to connect with its whims and fancies. She found a spot near the stream and planted her wand in the earth sitting cross legged besides it. Pebbles flew to a higher branch to watch over her and jinx chased butterflies. Jinx was a pretty useless familiar even if he was the sweetest little cat in the world. She closed her eyes and had to struggle against opening them, the wands light was incandescent. She took a moment to forgive herself for the error, the earth whispered to her and she realised it needed this energy right now. How lucky she chuckled. She sent it to the soil, to the roots of the trees around her, to mountains and roads, and fields. She had to be careful not to bless the insects or the creatures of the forest, with this much energy, it could only be safely sent to the elements. She directed it to the river who drank it up. For a second everything glowed and then in a beautiful rainbow it calmed down. Grounding complete.

Not bad, she could now meet the Bucklands to discuss their problem with the right energy. She lay herself down on the warm grass letting herself enjoy the meows of jinx chasing the blue butterfly. Pebbles seeing the ritual was complete climbed to a higher slimer branch. She liked some wind in her feathers and an aerial view of the forest, as the branch swung back and forth with her.

Maud closed her eyes and took in the moment, before starting her busy day.

Thank you for reading. I have to say I thought the story will be about a crabby witch cursing while trying to do her daily tasks. It took a surprising turn. Hope you enjoyed it.
